(Springfield, IL) — February 24, 2010. A divided House panel approved a bill that requires candidates for Governor and Lt. Governor to run as a team during the primary election.
The legislation, House Bill 5820, sponsored by House Deputy Majority Leader Lou Lang (D-Skokie), which maintains the controversial office in the state constitutional line-up, drew a 6-3 vote along party lines from the House Elections and Campaign Reform Committee.
House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) and State Rep. Harry Osterman (D-Chicago) are sponsoring a constitutional amendment, HJRCA50, to abolish the office. That measure was approved by the House Executive Committee today.
So, will it stay or will it go?
Both Lang’s bill and Madigan’s amendment now move to the full House for consideration.
Stay tuned.
