(Chicago, IL) — September 30, 2010. Illinois GOP House Minority Tom Cross (R-Oswego) is feeling optimistic about his chances in November.
In an interview yesterday with Chicago’s WBEZ radio, regarding Republican odds of capturing the Illinois House, Cross said, “I think 20 seats are in play.”
Though he “thinks” 20 House seats are in play–12 are needed for Cross to take the Speaker’s chair–the long-time minority leader seems at the same time to recognize that “20 seats” is overblown.
He told WBEZ’s Sam Hudzik, “Anything could happen. I think 12 is doable. I don’t think it’s easy. I think everything’s got to click.”
Steve Brown, spokesman for House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago), suggested that Cross’ assessment is more wishful dreaming.
He has a rather enthusiastic appeal he’s making to the media. He goes into different media markets, declares different districts all across the state his No. 1 priority, but the evidence doesn’t bare that out. When all is said and done, there might be some seats that switch hands. But I think Democrats will maintain a majority in both the House and the Senate. That’s pretty clear.
The House Republicans have a traditional of over estimating their gains, only to be humiliated the day after the elections–except in 1994.
But it’s the Democrats’ map, Madigan will hold the House.
