Illinois Elections 2010: Lisa Madigan Swamping Steve Kim in Final 30-Day Fundraising Sprint

(Chicago, IL) — October 14, 2010. The fund-raising contest between Attorney Lisa Madigan (D-Chicago) and GOP rival Steve Kim (R-Northbrook) is, however, no contest. Madigan is cleaning Kim’s clock.

Since October 1, Madigan has reported raising $212,325. Kim has reported raising $0.

Illinois election law requires candidates to report contributions $500 or more 30 days before the election within two business days of receipt of the money.

As of June 30, Madigan reported $4,434,234.43 in the bank; Kim, $15,917.77.

Key Madigan contributors in the 30-day sprint include homemakers Amy Blum of Winnetka and Suzanne Murray of Chicago. Blum donated $10,000 to Madigan and Murrary, kicked in $50,000, the largest contribution since the 30-day reporting period began.

Other top Madigan contributors include:

  • Illinois Laborer’s Legislative Committee:  $25,000
  • AFSCME Council 31:  $20,000
  • Democratic Attorneys General Association:  $25,000
  • Illinois State Medical Society:  $15,000

AFSCME has been at odds with Madigan’s father, House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago), but is apparently on good paper with the General.

In addition to a huge fund-raising edge, Madigan is also walloping Kim in a key poll. In a survey on September 14 by the Illinois Manufacturers Association, Madigan led Kim 55% to 28.5%.

Madigan pledged since summer that she would take no chances and would run a full-bore fall campaign given the surly voter mood toward Democrats. She has kept that promise. She’s raising big money and she’s already up with a new TV ad.

Madigan looks like a winner on November 2. But she’s taking no chances.
