Illinois Gets $48 Million from U.S. Government to Recover from Hurricane “Ike” storm damage in 2008

(Springfield, IL) – June 17, 2011. You remember Hurricane Ike from 2008? Well, the federal government is still dishing out “recovery” cash from that storm. And Illinois is getting some. Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity Director Warren Ribley yesterday announced that Illinois is getting $48 million.

There are 85 communities throughout the state are receiving funding from the federal “IKE” Disaster Recovery Program to assist with water and sewer improvements and other public infrastructure needs.

The $48 million in grants will support long-term recovery efforts within Illinois communities that battered by storms in 2008, according to Ribley.

“We are directing millions of dollars in federal disaster recovery funding to help residents and businesses devastated by the 2008 storms get back on their feet and begin to rebuild,” said Ribley.

Hopefully, people have not been holding their breath since 2008.

The 2008 disaster that was one of the costliest hurricanes ever to make landfall in the United States. Illinois received a total of $169 million in federal disaster funds under the program to assist communities within 41 Illinois counties.

Projects range from upgrades to water and sewer main lines, improvement to levees, pump stations, restoration of culverts, ditches, installation and or replacement of emergency power generators.

The final installment of federal recovery money from the 1967 blizzard should arrive by next year.

  1. I just read that some of this money is going to 6 south suburban communities to fix up and buy foreclosed homes in the communities. How does that possibly fit under what the money is suppose to be used for?
