(Springfield, IL) – March 16, 2012. Governor Pat Quinn will submit an official appeal to the Federal Emergency Management Agency on Friday morning asking the agency to reconsider its denial of Illinois’ federal disaster assistance request for five Southern Illinois counties walloped on February 29 by tornadoes, including the town of Harrisburg in which 7 people died.
Quinn originally requested federal disaster assistance on March 7.
The original damage assessment documented 426 damaged residences: 104 homes in Gallatin, Randolph, Saline, Union and Williamson counties that had been destroyed; 50 homes with major damage; and 272 others that were also damaged.
Illinois officials were notified March 10 the request had been denied.
On Thursday, Illinois Emergency Management Agency staff and federal officials were again in Harrisburg and Ridgway to gather additional damage assessment information.
Illinois was one of three Midwest states that were denied federal assistance following the late February tornadoes and is the only state to appeal the denial.
