(Chicago, IL) – March 21, 2012. Races for Chicago Democratic Ward Committeemen witnessed two incumbent upsets out of ten contested seats where incumbents were running and saw four new faces enter the committeemen ranks.
There were four open seats up for grabs and 36 uncontested seats.
The biggest upset was in the closet race located in the 29th ward. Alderman Deborah Graham won with 51.46% (3,021) of the vote, narrowly defeating U.S. Rep. Danny Davis who took 48.53% (2,848) of the vote.
A Democratic Ward Committeeman also flipped in the 1st ward in a three-way contest. Alderman Joe Moreno won a decisive victory over the incumbent committeeman Jesse Ruben.
With 3,292 ballots cast, Moreno won with 56.87% (1,872) of the vote over seat-holder Ruben who came in with only 16.25% (535) of the vote. Anne Shaw, also a challenger, received 26.88% (885) of the vote.
In the other nine contested races, the incumbent won.
