(Springfield, IL) — February 16, 2010. From the Department of Your Tax Dollars at Work, an Illinois House panel yesterday approved legislation that would ban the sale of cigarette lighters that resemble “Goofy”, “Smurfs”, “Tinky Winky” and other cartoon characters.
Uh, huh.
The Illinois House Consumer Protection Committee found time yesterday to approve unanimously, 13-0, legislation, House Bill 5139, sponsored by State Rep. Don Moffit (R-Gilson), to ban “novelty lighters” that are “designed to resemble a cartoon character, toy, or similar articles, or has other entertaining features,” according to the legislation.
Violators caught selling a “Tinker Bell” lighter could be fined up to $500.
Co-sponsors of this bill included: State Reps. Mike Smith (D), Tim Schmitz (R), Marlow Colvin (D), Mike Bost (R), and Mary Flowers(D).
This measure moves to the full House for consideration.
It may, mercifully, go up in smoke.
