Illinois Budget: Democratic Women Call on Quinn, Cross, Cullerton, Madigan, Radogno to Pass “Comprehensive Tax Reform”

(Springfield, IL) — March 16, 2010. From the Department of Wishful Thinking, more than 200 mostly Democratic women have sent a letter to Governor Pat Quinn, House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago), House Minority Leader Tom Cross (R-Oswego), and Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont) demanding that they pass a “comprehensive tax reform” package.

In the letter, the women lawmakers and advocates said, “We the undersigned represent women from across a broad spectrum of leadership in Illinois.”

Of the 22 lawmakers among the group signing the letter, there were no–zero–Republican lawmakers. The other signers were mostly social service leaders, Democratic tilting types, with the notable exception of Joyce Skoog, a Board Member on the Ounce of Prevention Fund who is a former GOP suburban mayor.

Not a lot of purple to the group.

“We are joining in one voice to call upon ALL of you to lead the Illinois General Assembly to act NOW to pass a comprehensive tax reform package that will provide adequate revenue to vital services supported by the state of Illinois,” according to the letter.

Well, it’s one Democratic voice. Cross and Radogno will be unmoved.

Representatives of the group will hold a press conference, being organized by Citizen Action Illinois, in Springfield on Tuesday, March 17 to officially release the letter.

Appearing in the capitol Blue Room tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. will be:

Senators Deanna Demuzio, Toi Hutchinson and Heather Steans.

Representatives Toni Berrios, Linda Chapa LaVia, Sara Feigenholtz, Esther Golar, Betsy Hannig, Elizabeth Hernandez, Naomi Jakobsson, Cynthia Soto and Karen Yarbrough.

Advocates– Lynda DeLaforgue (Citizen Action/Illinois), Kathy Ryg (Voices for Illinois Children), Ann Ford (Illinois Network of Centers for Independent Living), Pam Sutherland (Planned Parenthood of Illinois), Cinda Klickna and Patti Hodges (Illinois Education Association), Nancy Nelson (AARP Illinois), Bukola Bello (Center for Tax and Budget Accountability), Jennifer DeLeon (Lutheran Social Services of Illinois), Courtney Eccles (Protestants for the Common Good), Ireta Gasner (Ounce of Prevention Fund), Daria Mueller (Chicago Coalition for the Homeless), Sessy Nyman (Illinois Action for Children),  Vickie Smith (Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence), Lois Strom and Pat Porep (Association of University Women – Illinois)
