(Peoria, IL) — March 18, 2010. State Rep. Jehan Gordon (D-Peoria) is giving Governor Pat Quinn a legislative taste of the difficulties that his budget faces in the Illinois legislature.
Gordon said during a new conference on Thursday at the Peoria City Hall that she is opposed to the $300 million in cuts to cities. She says Quinn needs to find budget “efficiencies” instead. Yeah. Good luck with that.
“We have to make sure we take care of our vital services,” Gordon said, flanked by representatives from local governments around the area including Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis. “We all rely on our local governments to provide our essential needs.”
“It is a devastating blow,” Gordon said about the $300 million cut. “It without question sounds like a lot of money but when you think of the $11 billion to $13 billion deficit we are facing, it’s not even a drop in the bucket as it relates to Illinois’ budget deficit.”
$300 million not even a drop in the bucket? Oy.
House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) and Senate President John Cullerton‘s plan to adjourn on May 7 could fizzle if rank-and-file lawmakers refuse to recognize the need for cuts to state’s busted budget.
Stay tuned.
