(Carbondale, IL) — April 21, 2010. State Senator Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) holds a wide lead over Governor Pat Quinn in Southern Illinois, according to a new poll.
It’s a football field-wide lead.
The poll, conducted by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute (named after the father of Quinn’s running mate Sheila Simon), reveals that Brady is cleaning Quinn’s clock 48%-25%. Green Party candidate Rich Whitney draws 5% and 19% are undecided.
The poll of 401 registered voters in the area was taken April 5 to 13 and has a margin of error of 4.9 percent.
Critically for Quinn, Brady is under 50% which gives the Governor a slim chance to make a fight of it and seek inroads among the undecided voters. Cue Simon. Quinn, despite his accidental ascendancy and truncated term, however, is essentially the “incumbent” and the vast bulk of the undecided vote traditionally breaks to the challenger.
Perhaps it is no coincidence that Quinn and Simon will attend an Earth Day event at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.–as a campaign event.
Quinn and Simon will need to engage in some serious wooing of southern Illinois voters during the next six months to contain the expected downstate edge of Brady and his running mate, 27-year-old Jason Plummer. who is also from Southern Illinois.
The Quinn-Simon event will take place on the West Patio of the SIU-Carbondale Student Center.
