(Chicago, IL) — October 12, 2010. With 20 days remaining until the November 2, 2010 election, appointed State Senator John Mulroe (D-Chicago) is so far leading GOP challenger and 41st Ward Alderman Brian Doherty in the late campaign fund-raising phase.
Mulroe, who is seeking a full-term to the senate seat recently vacated by fellow Democrat James DeLeo, has brought in $36,840 in the last 10 days compared to $6,000 for Doherty, according to State Board of Elections records.
Illinois election law requires all candidates who received $500 or more in the last 30 days before the election to report the contributions within two business days.
Mulroe’s top contributors include the Democratic Party of Illinois and the Health Care Council of Illinois. The state party kicked-in $14,430.00 on October 8 for direct mail piece and the health group dropped a $10,000 check into the candidate’s coffers.
Meanwhile, half of Doherty’s contributions–$3,000–came from Wirtz Beverage Illinois in two $1,500 checks on October 4. The Illinois Senate GOP reported no contributions. Interestingly, Wirtz Beverage on January 6, 2010 donated $5,000 to Senate President John Cullerton‘s Senate Democratic Victory Fund, the group which is trying to secure a full-term for Mulroe. Wirtz’ Doherty donation now makes it nearly a wash.
A poll a few weeks ago by the Illinois Manufactures Association had Mulroe trailing Doherty by 10 points. However, the influx of cash into Mulroe’s operation is a clear signal that the Democrats plan to fight hard to hold the seat. The absence of comparable cash to the Doherty campaign–at the moment–may start raising questions regarding the GOP senate commitment to Doherty.
Stay tuned.
