(Chicago, IL) — October 25, 2010. Chicago Alderman Brian Doherty (R-41) has come under fire from his Democratic state senate opponent for failing to attend a candidate forum sponsored by the Polish Initiative of Chicago.
Doherty’s rival, State Senator John Mulroe (D-Chicago), did attend the debate and engaged members of the polish community, which makes up a considerable part of the 10th district’s electorate, over the election’s top issues and Doherty’s absence.
“Elected officials are supposed to represent all the people and that means you have to listen to their concerns first hand,” Mulroe said. “By not showing up, my opponent is sending the message that he is not going to stand up for this community when they need representation.”
Mulroe pointed out that Doherty’s skipping the debate likely speaks to the larger issue of Doherty’s commitment to potential constituents.
“He doesn’t show up when he knows he’s not going to like what people have to say, but I’ve got news for Alderman Doherty: that’s part of the job and he should know better,” Mulroe added.
“He did manage to show up to cast his vote for the parking meter deal, but he doesn’t want to be held accountable for his decisions. I am going to talk to folks about my decisions in the state senate, and I think that represents a fairly clear contrast between me and my opponent.”
There are eights days that remain until the November 2 election.
