(Springfield, IL) — December 17, 2010. The Illinois State Senate today officially sent the Illinois civil unions bill to the desk of Governor Pat Quinn for his signature.
The legislation, Senate Bill 1716, won its last legislative hurdle on December 1 when the Senate approved the bill 32-24. Only one senate lawmaker, State Senator Ira Silverstein (D-Chicago), voted present.
According to State Rep. Greg Harris (D-Chicago), the measure’s chief House sponsor, a signing ceremony by Quinn will likely be held in Chicago after the January 12 inaugural ceremonies.
“There will be a big announcement when we have the date, time and place figured out,” said Harris.
