(Springfield, IL) – June 2, 2011. Illinois civil union ceremonies are being held throughout Illinois starting today, and the state’s top insurance official is offering guidance for those couples seeking to take advantage of insurance opportunities.
The civil union law provides couples with the same rights that married people enjoy, which has prompted Illinois Department of Insurance Director Michael McRaith to offer an on-line guide that helps with things like enrolling a civil union spouse in an employer’s health plan, and survivor benefits.
Predicting that thousands of civil unions will be established, McRaith says the information is available on the agency’s Web site at www.insurance.illinois.gov. McRaith’s boss, Governor Pat Quinn, today will be hand for civil union ceremonies in Chicago’s Millennium Park.
